Listening to stories is a great way to develop a love for reading. Reading to a child also helps the child learn to read.
Each day, I read a book that correlates with the letter of the week or an upcoming holiday.
We have a listening center in which the children listen to a book on tape while looking at the book and following along.
The children are encouraged to bring in their favorite book or just any book that they would like me to read at circle time.
